Where does the dust that eventually compacts into strata come from? Space? Volcanoes? Wind scouring the ground? During the times when Earth was covered with ice, did the dust just stop accumulating because there was no wind-over-ground erosion? If the dust was from above the ice (volcanoes or space) then it would blanket the ice at first but later accumulate in localized areas as the ice melted.
