I read that bubble wrap was originally intended to be used as wallpaper, in a time when all things spacey were in vogue. The creator failed to convince the people he intended to of that use, but on the way home from his sales pitch he looked out the window of the plane and thought about how the bubbles would engulf things like a cloud. He tried it as a protector of things for shipping and voila!
